Blizzard Reveal Details on This Year’s Overwatch League Grand Finals

Although the regular season of Overwatch League is not even over yet, Blizzard Entertainment decided to share the first details on this year’s grand finals and All-Stars events.

The grand finals will be played online on October 8th – 10th. Due to the uncertainty of the current global epidemiological situation, the company has prepared two possible ways to hold the event.

The main plan is to have two best American teams flight over to Asia, where they will compete with the best two local teams on the same server. In this case, the teams will compete in a double-elimination bracket, the winner of which will receive $1,500,000. The runner-up will take home $750,000, while the teams placed third and fourth will be awarded $450,000 and $350,000 respectively.

However, if the league’s organizers will find that is not safe for the players to travel to the other region, there will be two separate grand finals. The specific format has not been announced, however it was described as two finalists in each region playing an “extended series”. That means that in this case will be two champions of the 2020 season. The winners of each region will receive $1,000,000, while the runner-ups will get $500,000.

The Grand Finals Weekend will be preceded by two regional All-Stars events – one for North America and one for Asia. It is expected that both events will include show matches with broadcast talents and professional players, as well as a 1v1 headshots-only competition.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Overwatch League was transitioned to online and split into two divisions – North America with 13 and Asia with 7 teams. Currently the league is still in the regular season, which will conclude on August 23rd.
